There’s no perfect way to give feedback, regardless if it’s positive or negative feedback.
Over the years, I’ve learned about different methods of giving feedback. Start with a positive, end with a negative. Start with a negative, then finish with a positive. Then, of course, there’s the shit sandwich, positive, negative, positive.
I would approach giving feedback, thinking about the outcome in mind. I knew at the end of the conversation, regardless if the feedback was positive or negative, that I wanted the person opposite me to feel motivated to get out there and be better than before the conversation.
How I got, there wasn’t set in stone. I didn’t want to go in with preconceived ideas or assumptions. Wherever the conversation went, I would keep up. But I would always think about how we were going to get to the outcome I wanted.
Like I said at the beginning, there’s no perfect way to give feedback. This method worked for me, and I received a lot of good feedback on this approach from my team, my peers, and my leaders.
Give it a go and see if it’s for you in your next feedback session.
