5 Mistakes You’re Making With Your To Do List

to do list mistakes

Are you finding that your to do list is letting you down?

You put it together every week or month, and by the end of it, you’re no closer to clearing it. Sometimes it gets even bigger. It might have to do with all of the common to do list mistakes.

Just because you make a list doesn’t mean that everything will magically get completed. There are some extra skills involved to avoid these to do list mistakes. You just need to know what to look out for.

1. Your To Do List is Not Written Down

I’ve worked with leaders where they’ve tapped their head and said that their to do list is all up there. But it never is. Tasks get missed, and mistakes get made. You need to have a to do list written down. It makes it a lot easier to track, and it’s so satisfying when you tick one of them off. So make sure to have it written down in either a soft copy or physical format.

2. There’s No Focus Areas

A to do list only works when there is a priority schedule. You have to figure out what work needs to get completed first and what can wait. Determine this by urgency. If you have a task on your list that impacts the momentum of the company, then tackle that one first. Then make your way down the rest of the list to see what can get done next.

3. Tasks Are Too General

The items on your to do list should be actions and not a list of chores. Don’t write down coaching on your to do list. Instead, make an action to coach Josh on his sales pitch technique. Your tasks need to be clear otherwise they’re going to remain on your list forever.

4. You’re Not Time Blocking

Part of the skill of creating a to do list is understanding how much time it will take to complete it. Once you’ve worked that out, block out some time to achieve it. Make sure to provide some extra time to finish it, just in case you underestimated it. You shouldn’t be multitasking at this time either. Your entire focus should be on clearing this item off your to do list.

5. No Wellbeing Tasks

When you’re blocking out time in your calendar to complete your to do list, make sure you’re including some wellbeing tasks and rest breaks. You’re not a machine. You need to take time out during the day if you’re going to remain in peak condition as a leader. So if you gain momentum and start clearing your to do list, add some wellbeing tasks in there. You’ll thank yourself after removing these ones too.

Not Sure What To Do Next?

If you’re serious about achieving your goals and you want to use a to do list, then it’s critical that you avoid these mistakes. Otherwise, you’ll end up in a vicious cycle of disappointment, and your goals will remain unchecked on your list.
