Where Are You Starting From?
The first step when you want to develop a strategy is to know where the start line is. It goes beyond just your results from the previous year. You want to look at the strides the business has made and the potential obstacles ahead of you.
Was the previous year a bit of a fluke, or is there an opportunity to go further? Once you have a complete view of the current landscape, you’re ready to start planning.
Where Do You Want To Go?
Now you have an understanding of where you’re starting from, you have to ask yourself what success looks like. Perhaps you want to match your results from the prior year, knowing there are obstacles you’ll face that are out of your control. Maybe you know you’re going to see a reduction in performance. How far are you willing to drop?
Remember, you’re trying to impress your boss. What will they be expecting, and how can you be realistic about it?
What Changes Have To Be Made?
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. If you have grand goals or plans, then something will need to change if you’re going to achieve them. It might be a different approach, or it could be additional training, but you need to make adjustments in order to achieve something big.
Make a long list knowing that you’re unlikely to get everything you ask for. However, ensure that you also include the impact if you aren’t able to secure them.
How Will You Implement Change?
Coming up with a list of changes is one thing. You also need to have a plan for how you’re going to implement them. For example, do you need to set up training sessions? When do you plan on running these sessions, and will it interfere with day-to-day operations?
For all of the improvements you have planned, you should design a change management plan to embed them successfully. Be sure to complete a review after each one, so you’re constantly improving with each new initiative.
How Will You Measure Progress?
It’s important that all goals or plans that you implement can be measured. Otherwise, how will you know if they’re working or if you’re heading in the right direction? It can be helpful to create KPIs and use these as milestones for your strategy.
These metrics can also be used in your one on ones with your manager and is a way for them to keep you accountable over the next 12 months.
