While on the outside, we might say that we’re not competitive in the workplace, on the inside, we want to be known as the leader with the best team.
There’s nothing wrong with taking pride in your work. But you do need to understand what is defined as the best team in your company and how you’re going to achieve this result.
If you’re not sure how to take your team to the top, start with these steps to pave your way.
1. Set Clear Priorities
Make sure that every single person in your team understands what the priorities are. You might have five or six things on the go, but you can’t work on everything at once. To avoid confusion, frustration, and loss of productivity, be clear on what is the top priority, then second, third, etc.
It’s also worth being clear on your priorities with stakeholders. Remember, they also have day jobs, and if you need their help, they need to know what they should be working on.
2. Let the Team Do What They do Best
No one likes a micromanager. Your team members have been employed for a reason. Let them do their job.
You also need to ensure they have a safe space to fail. This is how they will learn and exceed the goals that you set for them. So stand back and let the magic happen.
3. Guard the Perimeter
It’s astounding how many people have an opinion of how your team should be working or the barriers others will put up to slow you down. Your team doesn’t need to know all of this.
Shield them from the politics, unhelpful feedback, and non-constructive feedback. All this will do is make them second guess themselves.
4. Express Gratitude and Celebrate the Wins of the Best Team
Showing appreciation for the team is so valuable. A lot of managers will sometimes be grateful for every single thing their employees do. This can be detrimental though.
You want to celebrate the wins and when a goal is accomplished. This will make the victory even sweeter. You also need to take time to celebrate wins before moving on to the next goal. Otherwise, you risk your teaming burning out.
5. Take the Heat
If your team does something wrong or makes a mistake that gets the attention of someone higher up, then you need to be the one to take responsibility for it, regardless if you had anything to do with it or not.
This is not to say that you should ignore the problem. Resolve it and ensure that you do what you need to do in order to make sure it doesn’t happen again. But your team doesn’t need to know that they’ve caused problems for management. It will only distract them from the task at hand.
How to Become the Best Leader
You should never stop striving to be the best team or leader. It should be a never-ending goal that you’re constantly trying to achieve. Even if you’re number one, you should keep working hard to keep the top spot.
