Either one of two things will happen. In front of you is a collection of scattered blocks indicating you’ve got a day full of meetings, or there is a clean space meaning the day is free.
When you have no meetings, it can leave you with a bit of a buzz. The world is your oyster. You can get so many activities done right? That’s what we tell ourselves. But sometimes, it doesn’t always play out that way.
So how should you focus your energy, and what should you do with yourself when you don’t have any meetings? If you need some ideas, try these ones out.
1. Spend Time With Your Team
The most obvious thing to do when you have no meetings is to spend time with your team. Check in with your high performers and congratulate them on a job well done. Do some coaching and development with your mid or lower team members to help get them to where they need to be.
It’s also a good idea to book a team meeting or session where you can run through where you have been and what you’re working on. It’s an opportunity for them to get up to speed on where the company is, and it might generate some ideas that can help in your future meetings.
2. Plan Out Time to Develop Your Skills
Sometimes it’s good to have some me time. You might have development plans for your team members, but you should prepare one for yourself. Maybe you want to master a new skill or improve upon one you already have.
Look ahead in your schedule and start blocking out time before other people start locking in meetings. Aim for an hour and decide on how you’re going to improve yourself. Will it be through coursework or watching a series of videos? You can find these resources and add them to the timeslot, so you don’t waste time looking for content.
3. Strategise With Your Second-in-Charge
The feeling of being ahead is fantastic. So, why not make the most of no meetings and plan out the next three months with your next in charge as well as other members of your team.
Take a look at where you are today and where you want to be by the end of three months. What needs to be done to achieve that? Who will be responsible for ensuring these tasks are completed? These are the things you want to plan out and leave in the capable hands of your next in charge.
4. Get Ahead on Admin Work
No one enjoys doing admin work. It’s one of those tasks that tend to pile up quickly. So if you have no meetings, it’s a good idea to get rid of it all.
An even better idea is to get ahead of your admin or implement strategies that can reduce the amount coming your way in the future. You could even teach your second in charge some of the work as a development opportunity.
5. Reconnect With Your Peers
If you’ve been running from meeting to meeting, you might have lost contact with some of your colleagues. Sure, they might have been in some of the same meetings as you. But you probably haven’t been able to have a proper discussion with them.
Don’t book a meeting on a day you have no appointments. Go out for coffee, lunch, or just a walk around the office. But take the time to touch base with your teammates.
