New year. New goals. Right?
Whether you call them resolutions or objectives, it’s good to have one or two 2022 goals. You might be carrying them over from 2021 or starting from scratch after your achievements from last year.
But what if it’s the first time you’re setting these types of goals. You’ve suddenly woken up and decided that this is the year that you get serious about improving yourself. So, where do you start?
This isn’t a rehash of the how to set your goals in 2021 article. The world has changed again. So this is what you should do differently if you want to create your 2022 goals.
What’s Important to You?
This question isn’t about what’s essential to the business you work for. They have their own 2022 goals and objectives. It’s about what you want to achieve. It could be in the workplace or your personal life.
Do you want to end the year with a specific dollar figure in your bank account? Would you like the bathroom scales to return a certain number? Perhaps you would like to be on a particular type of path by the end of the year. Whatever it may be, it should be something that is for you and will provide you with a feeling of satisfaction when it’s achieved.
How do You Want to Improve?
The next aspect to consider is how you want to improve. This step will determine how likely you are to achieve your goal or not. For some objectives, it might seem like you have to grind by performing tasks you don’t enjoy in order to achieve it. But now, there are so many avenues to learn that there is something for everyone.
If you’re looking to change careers, then there are millions of videos on YouTube that can help point you in the right direction. There are also online courses that are a fraction of the cost of a university degree. There is literally a website and a podcast for everything. If you’re passionate about your 2022 goals, find something that works for you. Read books. Watch videos. Listen to podcasts. Do them all. But make sure that you enjoy the journey.
What Does Success Look Like to You?
You want to know that you’ve achieved your 2022 goals. So how will you determine that? Is it a numerical figure? Would it be a feeling? Sometimes it’s just ensuring you’re on the right path and have direction on where you’re heading.
Be clear on what success looks like for you. If you’re going to put in all the work, then you want to know you’ve achieved something by the time December 31 rolls around.
What is Your Stretch Goal?
Have you thought about what happens if you achieve your 2022 goals early? It could happen in February or in June. Depending on the type of objective, it can lead to complacency and even reverse the excellent work you’ve done to date.
The answer to avoiding this situation is having a stretch goal. You can deploy this objective in the instance you achieve something sooner than you thought. For example, maybe you want to be in a new leadership role before the end of 2022. You secure it in March. Your stretch goal might be to get promoted before the end of the year. If you have this mindset, you’ll continue to strive for improvement in order to achieve the new objective.
Is There Room for Change?
When you get excited about 2022 goals, you immediately hit the ground running because you can’t wait to achieve them. But then, a couple of months in, this momentum slows down. It can be for a couple of reasons. You start seeing results, and you ease your foot off the pedal. It could also be the thrill of the chase begins to wear off. Another reason is the way you’re progressing towards the objectives becomes boring.
So, switch it up when you start to notice that you’re not as invested in the tasks you’re doing to achieve your 2022 goals. If you’re watching YouTube videos, sign up for an online course. If you’re tired of reading books, move to audiobooks. Find something else that will help you stay on track but feels fresh that it will reignite your passion for achieving your objectives.
