Shifting your mindset is no easy task.
It’s not like you can wake up in the morning and decide you’re going to be a different person or approach the day with a new lease on life. It requires training yourself to look at things differently. You also need to be able to stop and take a breath before you jump into a situation using your initial instincts.
Shifting your mindset helps broaden your perspective. It allows you to add more skills and abilities to your toolset. You can also gain direction to help set you up on a path of success.
So how do you do it? How do you shift your mindset? There’s no simple answer, but these tips will help you get started.
1. Decide What’s Next
You can’t shift your mindset without deciding where it is you’re going. If you want to be in a leadership role, then what type of position are you looking for. Do you want to manage a team of people like your current colleagues, or are you interested in going in a different direction?
If you’re already in a leadership position, you need to decide what the next step is for you. Do you want to stay in a managerial role, or would you prefer to move into something else? For example, you might be involved in a number of projects or get exposed to other departments like IT, recruitment, or marketing. There’s no wrong answer. But you need to know what is next so you can take steps to move in that direction.
2. Measure Your Success
One of the best ways to improve your mindset is by looking at your achievements. Measure your success by day, week, month, and year. Work out how you’re going to do better than yesterday, even if it’s a baby step in the right direction. Compare your results to last week and look at where you’ve improved.
Measure your success to the prior month. Are you heading in the right direction, or do you need to alter course? Now, look at where you were last year. How much have you achieved? Are you in a better place, or have you gone backwards? Taking a moment to review these measurements will allow you to reflect and set you on a path forward.
3. Seek Feedback
You can only learn so much on your own. You need feedback to get better. Ask colleagues to review your work or observe how you approach situations. Get them to look for opportunities that will help you improve. It might be a shortcut that you didn’t know about or an angle that you’ve never considered.
Online courses and YouTube videos can show you the fundamentals. But it’s feedback from experts that will help you get better. Don’t be afraid to seek it out. Even if it’s from people, you don’t know very well. They’re often the best ones to approach as they don’t have any biases.
4. Use Your Job Description as a Suggestion Instead of an Expectation
Many people use their job description as a bible. Unless this document explicitly states it, they will or won’t do specific tasks. But this move does restrict your development, not necessarily within your career but for your own personal development.
Your job description should be treated as a guide. It’s up to you and you alone to make the role its own. What you should be aiming for is redefining it. Create something that your direct reports or HR couldn’t have even imagined. This is how you demonstrate value within an organisation and create your own path.
5. Redefine Failure
This can be the hardest challenge to overcome. It takes a lot of practice. But you need to stop seeing failure as a problem. When you don’t get something right, it doesn’t mean you should start worrying about job security or feel like you’ve let everyone down. The more you dwell on this, the worse your mindset will be.
Take a look at what you can learn from your failure. Look at aspects such as where things may have gone wrong or how you could have approached the situation differently. The most important factor is sharing this with your manager. They will prefer that you learned something rather than seeing you make the same mistakes over and over again.

You’ll know when it’s time to shift your mindset. You know that something has to change, and for that to happen, you need to alter the way you think. Nothing will be immediate. It’s something you’re going to have to continue to practice. Eventually, it will become second nature, and that’s how you’ll know you’re on the right track.
