How to Fake it Before You Make it

We’ve all heard the phrase, fake it before you make it.

It might sound like a bad thing. But it really isn’t. You should actually be proud. You’ve taken the leap outside of your comfort zone. You’re in unfamiliar territory. There are some tasks you can utilise transferrable skills. But there are others that require you to try it and see what happens.

This is faking it before you make it.

Here’s what you need to do if you find yourself in a position where you believe you don’t know what you’re doing. You might be surprised you actually do. You just don’t know it yet.


It’s simple. Don’t be the one talking non-stop in meetings or with colleagues. Your words won’t disguise that you might not be 100% confident in what you’re doing. The best thing you can do is listen to the room.

Keep an ear out for keywords and phrases. Particularly ones that are repeated. When the session is over, find out more information about them. It becomes your homework, and it will help you grow confidence in your role.

Put in the Time

Don’t be the leader that everyone knows shows up late and leaves early. You want to have the right presence in an office. Be available and utilise any free time you have by catching up with colleagues and learning more about your role and the business.

At the same time you’re doing this, you’re gaining respect from your fellow team members. You’re demonstrating that you’re doing the hard work. This will come in handy when you need help from them for projects or initiatives you want to run.

Seek Feedback

You might think feedback will expose you, but not if you do it correctly. Make it a regular practice and part of your culture. It will allow you to not only receive feedback but share your own with team members and colleagues.

Keep it simple. You don’t need reports and presentations with recommendations. Try something like continue and consider. Name one thing the other person should continue doing, and one thing they should consider changing that will help them improve. Then ask them to do the same for you.


All of these steps can help you learn more about how you can make it. But you also need to be able to complete your own studies. Work out the skills you need and find ways to develop them, whether it be through YouTube videos or online courses.

Do this in conjunction with the steps above. The more ways you’re learning, the faster you’ll make it and won’t feel bad about faking it.

Fake it before you make it doesn’t mean putting on a show. It’s a method for you to learn. Listen, seek feedback, and upskill yourself. Most importantly, put in the time. It will show your commitment and help you gain the respect of your colleagues.
