The most obvious sentence to this question is consistent pay. However, it’s unlikely this is going to be the answer. The type of role the candidate is applying for will determine the response.

A good answer would be that they would like to either develop new skills or strengthen upon existing abilities they currently possess. This response can apply to any role and indicates that they are passionate about learning and continuous improvement.

Where Do You Want This Role to Take You?

As the interviewer, it’s important to remember that the role the candidate is applying for is unlikely to be the last stop in their career. So why not ask them where they want to go and how they’d like to get there.

It’s a good sense check if the candidate is applying for the right role or the best organisation for what they’re looking for. You don’t want to waste their time just as much as they shouldn’t want to waste yours.

What Do You Want in a Manager?

One of the most common questions is, “how do you like to be managed”. However, this one will give you that answer as well as allow you to learn the type of employee they’re likely to be.

They might be looking for someone who is constantly available to answer questions or solve problems. Alternatively, they might want a manager who can coach and develop them. Only you can answer the type of direct report you need for your team.

What Are You Looking For in a Job?

It might seem another question begging to be answered with steady pay, but you might be surprised by the types of responses you get. For some, it might be a career change, and they’re looking to gain experience, and others might be looking to make a difference.

The Great Resignation has sparked a lot of people to rethink how they spend their day. Many want to have a purpose in their job or contribute to a cause. Be honest and upfront if they’ll get that in the role they’re applying for or if they should look elsewhere.

How Long Would You Like to be in This Role?

It’s vital to remember that this role is likely a stepping stone to something bigger and better for the candidate. So it’s a good idea to know their plans and where they would like to go next.

You should also highlight where you can and can’t help. Again, you want to be honest and upfront about what the organisation can provide. It will help the candidate decide if they’re the right fit for the company and the role.

The best job interviews are the ones where it feels like a conversation. You’ll be able to tell as the candidate will let their guard down and show their true self.
