How to Reflect on 2022 (When it’s Not Over Yet)

Sure, 2022 isn’t quite in the books.

But, it feels like time is moving faster than ever, and you want to start planning for 2023 as soon as possible. So, you need to be able to look back on what’s transpired to help you prepare for the months ahead.

Where do you start? What should you focus on? It might seem easy to look at what didn’t work. However, there are plenty of other ways to reflect on 2022 to help you prepare for the next 12 months.

Review Your Metrics for Success

One of the best places to start is to look at what you measure to determine success. Did your metrics help you get closer to the business objectives? Were your staff able to achieve targets, or were they unreasonable? Find out why this is the case.

If your metrics are helping you meet business goals, you can move on to the next step. But if not, then consider what measurements you should put in place. You also have to consider the support and change initiatives you may have to implement. It might be painful to begin with, but it will get you to where you need to be.

Analyse Your Journey

Another 2022 reflection should be how your journey played out through the year. Was there consistent improvement? Maybe there were ups and downs throughout the year. You should also look at how it compared to the previous 12 months.

Now you need to determine if this is the expectation moving forward or does it need to change. Something needs to adjust if you feel like you’re going backwards. Map out what you would like your journey to be and how you plan on making it a reality.

What is Your True North?

Every organisation should have a true north. It determines where you put your focus, what you say yes to and where the business is heading. This can change from time to time as the industry evolves or company objectives are achieved.

When you reflect on 2022, you should know how you were tracking towards your true north. As you look to 2023, you need to determine if you’re going in the same direction or if you must change course toward a new destination.
